On March 28, 2025, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar near Mandalay, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The tremors were felt as far as Bangkok, Thailand, where significant damage occurred, including the collapse of a high-rise building under construction.
Operation Brahma - India's Swift Humanitarian Response
In the aftermath of the disaster, India promptly initiated 'Operation Brahma' to provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar. On March 29, an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft delivered approximately 15 tonnes of relief materials to Yangon. The supplies included tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, solar lamps, generator sets, and essential medicines.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized India's commitment, stating, "India dispatches first tranche of urgent humanitarian aid for the people of Myanmar." He also noted that a search and rescue team, along with a medical team, accompanied the flight to assist in relief operations.
Prime Minister Modi's Message of Solidarity
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences and solidarity with the people of Myanmar. In a message on social media, he conveyed India's readiness to offer all possible assistance and highlighted the importance of standing with neighboring countries during such challenging times.
International Community Rallies Support
The international community has responded to Myanmar's appeal for assistance. China, Russia, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States have dispatched rescue teams and supplies to aid in relief efforts.
